biographical

I was born and educated in North London, exhibiting some talent when young, with such feats of rhyming as:

Coruscating shades of green,
Invade depressions in my dream.
The tonic waters of the ocean
Are imprints on my past emotion.

Worst decision: choosing Science over English for A ’level
Best decision: The same

Rediscovered poetry sitting on a bed in a student flat in Norwich, age 21, then went mad on it in 1981 after discovering T S Eliot’s essays "on Poetry and Poets" and W B Yeats’ "Selected Poems" while living in Brussels.

Realised it was possible to be famous for writing poetry (but not rich). I have been forced to live a double life ever since.

Favourite poet: Zbignieuw Herbert.
Favourite poem: A Badger, by Ted Hughes.

Wrote an undergraduate novel (first draft), in Brussels; another novel, Weaver in early 90’s; finished first part of a trilogy, Inside Out (2000); wrote sequel Over and Above (2002); started another novel, The Chocolate Club (2005).

All remain unpublished

Greatest revelation: Poetry can save the world
Greatest fear: The world won't save poetry
